Key takeaways
- 01Document the inspection question and coverage.
- 02Keep setup details connected to the saved evidence.
- 03State limitations and the next review action.

A useful ultrasonic inspection report begins with the engineering question. Identify the component, the examination area and the purpose of the work before describing the instrument. That context helps readers decide whether the reported coverage answers their question or whether another examination is needed.
Describe the material and geometry where they affect interpretation. Include the inspection conditions and the procedure used. Where information is unavailable, state that limitation clearly rather than leaving the reviewer to infer it from a drawing or a photograph.
Record the equipment identification, probe arrangement, reference specimen and checks used to establish the measurement. Connect those details to the saved data. A traceable record allows a reviewer to understand the setup and gives a later inspection a useful starting point.
Explain how locations are identified. A consistent reference direction and an annotated component sketch are often more useful than an isolated screenshot. Label units and axes so the reader can connect the observation to the component without relying on the operator being available.
Describe the observation first, then explain the interpretation and the basis for it. Include relevant views and note any additional checks. A report should make uncertainty visible; a result that needs further evaluation should be identified as such.
- State what was examined and what was excluded.
- Connect observations to locations and saved data.
- Identify the procedure and reference checks.
- Describe limitations and the recommended next action.
04Finish with a useful handover
Close with the review status, outstanding questions and the next action. Keep the conclusion consistent with the evidence and the agreed examination scope. This fictional article is a layout and publishing example, not an inspection procedure or an acceptance decision.
