01About CNDE
The Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation at IIT Madras is one of the world’s leading centres for non-destructive evaluation research and technology translation, with over 25 years of NDE research behind it.
Its work covers deep research, industrial consultancy and testing, advanced training, and the startups that carry CNDE technology into industry.
CNDE is at Room 312, Machine Design Section, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai 600036, India.
Non-destructive evaluation in depth: ultrasonic and guided-wave methods, radiography, thermography, structural health monitoring and AI for inspection data, among others, from fundamental science to deployable systems.
02Testing & consultancy
Four kinds of engagement: feasibility studies, laboratory access and testing, advanced training programmes, and sponsored and collaborative research.
They support any organisation where inspection integrity is critical and off-the-shelf solutions are not enough.
Yes. CNDE’s 15 specialised labs and 4,400 sq. ft. core facility are open for inspection, characterisation and testing work across all major NDE modalities.
A time-bound study that answers one question: will your proposed NDE method or system work for your specific application? CNDE combines experiments and modelling to give an evidence-based go/no-go decision and clear next steps.
For challenges that need new science rather than existing methods, CNDE undertakes sponsored research projects under IIT Madras’s ICSR framework, which provides full administrative and legal support for industry–academia collaboration.
Aerospace and defence, energy and oil and gas, manufacturing and heavy industry, infrastructure and transportation, and the companies that develop NDE technology themselves.
For consultancy, feasibility studies, lab access, training or sponsored research, contact the CNDE team and describe the problem; we will point you to the right people.
Organisations that expect to work with CNDE regularly often join NCNDE, the most structured and cost-effective route.
03Training
Professionals who already understand NDE: inspection engineers and NDT professionals, industrial technical teams, R&D and engineering managers, and academic researchers and students.
Digital radiography (DDA and CR), phased array ultrasonic testing, structural health monitoring, guided wave ultrasonics, thermography and thermal NDE, and artificial intelligence in NDE, plus bespoke in-house programmes.
They are delivered at IIT Madras, at client sites and in hybrid formats. Digital radiography runs as a 5-day intensive; most others are modular.
Programmes align with ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ISO 9712 and relevant ASTM standards, and participants receive CNDE–IIT Madras completion certificates.
CNDE can also advise on ISNT, ASNT or PCN certification pathways.
Upcoming programmes are listed on the events page with their dates, venue and format, and training schedules are also published through NCNDE. For a date that suits your team, contact us.
04NCNDE membership
The National Consortium for Non-Destructive Evaluation is India’s first industry-driven NDE research consortium, established in November 2024 under CNDE, IIT Madras.
Membership is open to industrial organisations, government bodies, PSUs, NDT technology developers and educational institutions worldwide.
Three: Platinum, Gold and Silver. Each runs for three years with yearly instalments, and they differ in board representation, free laboratory hours and feasibility studies, and scheduling preference.
The membership page compares the tiers side by side.
Send an enquiry from the NCNDE contact page and choose the membership you are interested in. The team will discuss the best option for your organisation.
05Startups & partnerships
CNDE’s research has created deep-tech ventures that take lab science into industrial deployment, including Dhvani Research, Detect Technologies, Planys Technologies, XYMA Analytics and Solinas Integrity.
CNDE helps turn high-value research problems into deployable industrial technologies. If you have a challenge that demands deep science, this is where it can begin.
06News, events & updates
